A jeweller has been hacked to death in Dhaka's Savar and robbed of a bag containing gold and cash.

Based on the CCTV footage, police said the murder and robbery had occurred outside “Dilip Swarnalaya” in Ashulia's Nayarhat Bazar around 8:30pm on Sunday.

Four assailants took part in the attack.

The deceased has been identified as Dilip Das, 47, a resident of Pathalia union.

The victim’s cousin Khokan Sarkar said he was returning home “with money and about 20 bhori or 233.28 grams of gold” in his bag after closing the shop.

"But machete-wielding robbers pulled the bag from behind outside the shop. When Dilip turned back, they hacked him in the face, chest, and parts of the body and fled with the bag in a private car."

They blew up some improvised explosives to create panic in the market while leaving, he said.

The deceased’s wife Saraswati Das said the distance between their house and the shop is about one kilometre.

She claimed that there was cash and gold in the bag. However, she could not confirm the amount of the money.

Enam Medical College emergency department physician Merajur Rehan Parvez said the businessman was brought to the hospital at 9:45pm.

He was unconscious, but breathing at that moment.

“He died within 2 to 3 minutes of administering first aid."

Merajur said, "Dilip died due to excessive bleeding. His lungs were severely damaged. He had a deep injury on his back."

Law-enforcing personnel have visited Nayarhat Bazar after the incident.
