In a disturbing incident in Narayanganj’s Rupganj, three women have been assaulted, their hair cut while tied to a tree over claims they stole a gold chain.
The incident took place at Dahargaon on Monday afternoon, according to Rupganj Police chief Md Sabzel Hossain.
He said the women are currently in police custody at the station.
Police said two of the middle-aged women were from Khulna and one from Cumilla.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam said, “They were tied up on allegations of stealing a gold chain from Selim Mia’s house. Selim Mia, members of his family and several local people cut their hair and beat them.”
Police moved in after a video of the incident spread on social media, he added, and took them into protective custody from the scene.
The footage circulating online shows Selim cutting the women’s hair with sharp scissors.
At one point, one of the women is heard pleading: “Baba, please don’t cut my hair, baba.”
Selim, dressed in a white panjabi, responded: “I’ll throw you into the pond. If you keep your hair, you’ll feel cold. I’ll throw you into the pond and kill you.”
Despite the threat, the woman continues begging him not to cut her hair.
After the hair-cutting, the video shows a young man in an orange T-shirt and another woman beating the three.
Selim later claimed the women were caught while fleeing after snatching a gold chain from his wife’s neck.
ASP Mehedi said the women denied the theft allegations, telling police they had gone to the house in search of work.
The officer said the women received primary medical treatment.
“Theft is a crime. But no one can take the law into their own hands. Tying someone up, beating them and cutting their hair are also punishable offences,” he said.
Either side may file complaints, he added, and police will take action following an investigation.
No written complaint had been filed by either party as of 9pm, Mehedi said.
