High Court scraps petition challenging ban on Awami League activities

The High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the validity of the notification issued banning all activities of the Awami League, its branches, affiliates and fraternal organisations.  It was dismissed on the grounds that the petition was not properly applied for.

A High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan made the decision on Sunday.

After the hearing, Deputy Attorney General Noor Muhammad Azmi told bdnews24.com that the court dismissed the writ on the ground that it was not raised properly.

A previous petition filed on Sept 7 had sought the issuance of a rule on the matter and a suspension of the notice while the rule was pending.

The petition was on the agenda of the same High Court bench on Sept 7, but a hearing was not held that day.

In May 2025, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification banning the activities of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations.

The notification states that all activities, including any kind of publication, media, online and social media campaigning, processions, meetings, gatherings, and organising conferences of the leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Awami League and all its branches, affiliates, and fraternal organisations are prohibited until the trials of the party’s leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal is completed.
