Former Bhola-2 MP Ali Azam Mukul has been arrested in Dhaka.
The Rapid Action Battalion, or RAB, confirmed his arrest in connection with a murder case filed during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
Mukul is one of the prime suspects in the murder of Nahidul Islam in Mirpur.
He was detained from the Hazaribagh around 7:30 pm on Wednesday, the RAB said in a statement.
Mukul is the nephew of senior politician Tofail Ahmed, a member of the Awami League advisory council.
He entered Parliament for the first time in 2012 and later won consecutively in the 2018 and 2024 general elections.
Before entering national politics, Mukul had also served as the mayor of the Doulotkhan municipality in Bhola.
Ever since Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country for India on Aug 5 and the interim government took over on Aug 8, Awami League ministers, state ministers, high-profile leaders and influential parliamentarians are being arrested.
After the fall of the Awami League government, charges of attempted murder, extortion, and abduction have been filed against Mukul in Bhola’s courts.
