The body of a missing 7-month-old baby has been recovered 14 hours after a rickshaw she was on fell into a drain during heavy rain in Chattogram’s Kapasgola.
The child, known by her first name Sheheriz, was found dead around 10:10am on Saturday in a canal near the Chaktai leather warehouse area, 4-5 km away from where she went missing.
Agrabad Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Mohammad Abdullah said locals spotted the floating body in the canal and handed it over to the police.
On Friday evening, Sheheriz was returning home on a battery-run rickshaw with her mother and grandmother during the downpour.
When the rickshaw reached near the Kapasgola Bridge under Chawkbazar Police Station, it slipped into a roadside drain.
Although her mother tried to hold on to the baby, she lost her grip in the strong current and the child was swept away.
Both the mother and grandmother were rescued.
The Fire Service’s diving unit was deployed to search for the missing child.
After an overnight search, the infant's body was recovered from the canal in Chaktai on Saturday morning, about 14 hours after she went missing.
