The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned that heavy rainfall may cause rivers in four divisions of the country’s north, northeast, and east to cross danger levels.

The agency's Executive Engineer Sardar Uday Raihan told bdnews24.com that the Muhuri River in the Feni district could flow near the danger mark on Friday and Saturday. In some places, the water may even exceed the danger mark.

“During this period, the water levels of the Shari-Goyain River in Sylhet, Jadukata in Sunamganj, Khowai in Habiganj and the Someshwari River in Netrokona will rise rapidly. They may flow near the danger level, with a possibility of crossing it in a few places.”

A special FFWC bulletin on Tuesday said that due to heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Chattogram Division and adjacent upstream areas, the water levels of the Halda, Gomti, Feni, Muhuri, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers could rise over the next five days.

In the Rangpur Division, the water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers may surge from Thursday to Sunday.

On Friday and Saturday, the water levels of the Teesta River in the Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts could rapidly swell nearing the danger mark, with a possibility of crossing it in some areas.

The FFWC also cautioned that due to heavy rainfall from Thursday to Sunday, the water levels of border-adjacent rivers—Shari-Goyain, Jadukata, Manu, Khowai, Dhalai, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someshwari and Jinjiram—in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sherpur, Netrokona, Mymensingh and Jamalpur districts respectively may rise.

On Tuesday, a low-pressure system developed over the Bay of Bengal. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast increased rainfall under its influence.
