A clash has erupted in Narail’s Lohagara Upazila over “local dominance”, leaving at least 15 people injured and several houses vandalised.
The incident has been brought under control after police deployment.
The violence broke out at Matiadanga village under Kotakol Union on Thursday at midnight, Lohagara Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy said.
He added that the situation has since calmed after police intervention.
Citing local residents, he said a long-running dispute over local dominance had been simmering between two local groups known as the Munshi group and the Molla group.
The feud flared up when supporters of current Union Parishad member Abul Kalam Azad and Omar Faruk from the Munshi group became embroiled in a clash with followers of former Union Parishad member Shahidul Islam of the Molla group.
During the violence, eight to nine houses belonging to members of the Munshi group were reportedly vandalised.
The injured from both sides were admitted to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex and Narail District Hospital.
Inspector Roy said police have been deployed in the area following the incident.
The situation is now under control, and legal action will be taken if complaints are filed, he added.
