Writer Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and three others have been named in a draft investigation report in a crimes against humanity case over attacks on Dhaka University students during the July Uprising.

The others are former Dhaka University vice-chancellors ASM Maksud Kamal and Md Akhtaruzzaman, and former Appellate Division judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) told bdnews24.com on Thursday that the investigation into the attacks is nearing completion.

“We have received the draft report prepared by the investigation officer and are reviewing it. It will be finalised soon.”

Tamim said the report would be finalised after review, adding: “If any amendments are needed, those will be completed and the final report will be available quickly.”

More than 300 students were injured in attacks around Dhaka University on Jul 15, 2024, he said.

The four are accused of making provocative statements and directly or indirectly backing the attacks.

The Awami League government fell on Aug 5 following the mass uprising. On Oct 21, charges were brought against 391 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, with another 800-1,000 unnamed people listed.

The Jul 15 clashes between quota reform protesters and Chhatra League activists intensified the movement, which later grew into a nationwide campaign to oust the government.
