A child has been rescued and taken to the hospital after falling into a roadside drain in Chattogram’s Halishahar.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Anandapur Tasfia Gate area of Halishahar, according to the Fire Service and police.
The identity of the girl, believed to be around three years old, could not be immediately known.
Kamrul Islam, leader of the Chattogram divisional unit of the Fire Service, said: “The drain had a concrete slab cover. At one spot, the slab was removed to allow rainwater to flow in from the road. The child fell through that opening.”
Firefighters, with the help of locals, rescued the girl from about 30 yards downstream and rushed her to a hospital, Kamrul added.
Sub-Inspector Iman Dutta of Halishahar Police Station, who visited the scene, said they had heard the child may have fallen into the drain while trying to retrieve a ball.
“We’re still investigating whether she was swept in by the current or fell in some other way,” he said.
No family members of the child were found at the scene.
