The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says the low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal has intensified and transformed into a well-marked low.
As a result, the BMD has asked the four maritime ports of the country to raise local cautionary signal No. 3.
In a special warning on Friday, the BMD said that the low -- located in the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining west-central bay off the Odisha-Andhra coast of India -- turned into a well-marked low located in the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining central bay around 6am on Friday.
The Met Office says that it may intensify further. Due to this, a steep pressure gradient lies over the north bay. Under its influence, gusty or squally winds may blow over the north bay and Bangladesh’s coastal areas and sea ports.
Accordingly, the sea ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been asked to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the north bay have been asked to come close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
In its regular bulletin on Friday morning, the BMD said that the axis of the monsoon troughs runs through East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, the centre of the well-marked low to Assam across the southern part of Bangladesh.
However, the monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and is moderate to strong over the north bay.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are likely to occur at a few places in the Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions and one or two places in the Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions over the next 24 hours.
There may also be moderate to heavy rainfall in some places in the Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.
The day temperature may decrease slightly across the country over this period, while the night temperature may remain almost unchanged.
The highest rainfall in the country over the last 24 hours was in Koyra in Khulna with 47mm. In addition, 20mm of rain fell in Khulna and 19mm in Kutubdia.
During this period, the highest temperature recorded in the country was 36.5 degrees Celsius in Netrokona and Tangail. The lowest temperature was 23.8 degrees Celsius in Bandarban.
