The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a madrasa teacher accused of raping a 12-year-old female student in Netrokona’s Madan Upazila.
The suspect, Aman Ullah, was arrested by members of Mymensingh RAB-14 from Gouripur, Mymensingh around 4:15am on Wednesday, said Madan Police chief Tariqul Islam.
He is a teacher at the Hazrat Fatematuzzahura Women's Qaumi Madrasa.
On Apr 23, the student's mother filed a case at the police station accusing Md Sagar and his brother Mamun Mia of raping the student.
The mother works as a domestic help in Sylhet. She got divorced with her husband. The child has been living with her maternal grandmother and studying in the madrasa.
However, the accused teacher, being influential in the area, tried to cover up the incident after it happened. The family alleged that he even wanted to settle the matter with money.
But when the child's mother did not agree, the teacher closed the madrasa he had founded and fled the area. The madrasa is still closed. This has largely hushed up the matter.
But last Friday, when the girl's mother took her to a private diagnostic centre in Madan Upazila Sadar for a health check-up, a doctor's examination revealed that she was seven months pregnant.
Later, when the doctor posted about the matter on Facebook, it came to everyone's attention.
The child's doctor, Saima Akter, a gynecologist in Mymensingh, said that after the madrasa holidays in November last year, the teacher did not let the child go home. He asked him to sweep the madrasa balcony. When the balcony was swept, the teacher asked him to sweep his own house as well.
When the child went to sweep the room, the teacher locked the door and raped the child. Later, he raped the child five to seven times on different occasions intimidating her, the doctor said.
She said, "At that time, the child was severely intimidated. She was told that if he told anyone about this incident, she and her grandmother would be killed. They would go to Sylhet and kill her mother as well. This is how the incident happened."
The physician also mentioned the complication of the student was likely to go through when it comes to deliver the child. This is because the size of the child she is carrying is bigger in comparison to her body. It may create physical complications, she said.
Police officer Tariqul said, "We filed a case immediately after the complaint was filed. We started a drive to arrest the accused. Following this, members of RAB-14 were able to arrest him. The suspect is still in RAB custody. They will hand him over to the police station later."
