Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has publicly disclosed details of his assets and financial standing in a Facebook post, reporting a bank balance of Tk 12.3 million and ownership of three flats.
In the post on Tuesday, he said there has been little change in his finances since he assumed office.
He added that he had published a full disclosure of his assets and property in January 2025.
In his January disclosure, Shafiqul revealed he owned a flat in Shaheenbagh, while he inherited another flat in Dania. He and his wife each owned an apartment in Mymensingh, he said.
Regarding his bank accounts, Shafiqul wrote: “At that time, I had stated that I only have one bank account in a state-owned bank, which held a balance of Tk 11.4 million.”
“A large portion of this amount came from gratuity received from the international news agency AFP, where I worked from 2005 until August 2024. In addition, I own 40 decimals [approximately 1,618 square metres] of agricultural land in my native village in Magura,” he added.
He said he still owns three flats, while retaining ownership of the same land as before. His wife still owns one flat, Shafiqul added.
On changes in his bank balance, he wrote: “There has been a slight change in my bank balance. I still have only one bank account, which now holds Tk 12.3 million -- an increase of Tk 0.9 million.”
Explaining the source of the additional amount of money, he said his brother-in-law returned Tk 750,000 that he had borrowed from him, while his elder brother sent $2,500 to distribute among destitute families in the month of Ramadan.
He welcomed the verification of his assets and financial disclosures.
On Aug 13, 2024, Shafiqul, former bureau chief of the news agency AFP, was appointed on a contractual basis as the press secretary to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
He was initially given the rank of a secretary, which was changed in February last year to senior secretary.
