Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Sarwar has warned transport operators of “tough action” if they cause traffic congestion during the Eid-ul-Fitr rush.
Speaking at a view-exchange meeting with bus owners and workers at Mohakhali Bus Terminal on Wednesday, the commissioner said while some minor issues might be overlooked, obstructing traffic flow would not be tolerated.
"We may overlook certain things, but if any action causes a tailback, we will take strict measures," Sarwar said, specifically urging drivers not to pick up passengers by stopping buses in the middle of the road.
He said police have taken necessary security measures to ensure a smooth journey for holidaymakers.
"Surveillance will be intensified at terminals and key intersections. Immediate action will be taken upon any reports of extortion or passenger harassment," the DMP chief added.
The event was chaired by Abul Kalam Azad. Among others, Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, chief coordinator of the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal and MP for Pabna-5, also spoke at the meeting.
Shimul stressed the need for collective efforts to ensure passenger safety and prevent overcharging or extortion during the mass exodus from the capital during Eid.
