An activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has alleged that his head and eyebrows were shaved as punishment for campaigning for an independent candidate in Mymensingh’s Gouripur Upazila.

The victim, Abdul Mannan Talukdar, made the allegations during a media briefing at the Mymensingh Town Hall on Thursday.

Mannan, a member of the Gouripur Upazila BNP, had previously filed a case at Gouripur Police Station on Wednesday over the incident.

The primary accused has been identified as Shahi Munshi, president of the party’s peasant wing’s (Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal) Gouripur municipality unit, alongside six to seven unidentified individuals.

During the briefing, Mannan said he had campaigned for independent candidate Ahammed Tyabur Rahaman Hiron in the recent parliamentary election.

Shahi Munshi, the suspect, is known as a follower of the BNP candidate and current state minister Iqbal Hossain.

Mannan recounted the events of Feb 18, "Around 2pm, I was travelling from Gouripur to Mymensingh by auto-rickshaw. The vehicle was intercepted near the railway crossing adjacent to the Gouripur new bus stand, ostensibly for municipal tax collection.

“Shahi Munshi then dragged me out of the vehicle and began beating me indiscriminately."

He alleged, "I was subsequently taken to a barbershop where they shaved my head and eyebrows. Passers-by were then called over to witness me being stood up and publicly humiliated."

Tyabur, the defeated independent candidate and former BNP leader, was also present at the briefing.

He claimed that since his narrow defeat, supporters of the sheaf of paddy have been attacking the homes of his workers.

Shahi Munshi has denied all allegations, describing the case as "staged”.

"After Iqbal Hossain was appointed state minister, we held a victory procession in the town. Angered by this, Tyabur filed a fabricated case against us," Munshi said.

He insisted that no such incident occurred in Gouripur and that an investigation would prove his innocence, claiming the case was intended solely for harassment.

Police, however, indicated that preliminary findings support the victim's claims.

Debashish Karmakar, additional superintendent of police (Gouripur, Nandail, and Ishwarganj circles), said: "The complaint was accepted and a case has been registered. Legal action is being taken against the perpetrators following a proper investigation."
