The government is drafting a National Tourism Policy 2026 to accelerate the development of Bangladesh’s tourism sector, State Minister for Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said.
Millat on Thursday said realistic decisions would be taken to develop tourist attractions.
“We have taken initiatives to sign memoranda of understanding with several ministries to eliminate inter-ministerial coordination gaps. We are formulating the National Tourism Policy 2026,” he said.
He also called for greater private-sector involvement, saying the government planned to create investment-friendly policies and increase staffing at the Bangladesh Tourism Board and Tourist Police.
The minister said the government hoped tourism could eventually contribute 10 percent of national GDP.
Tourism Secretary Fahmida Akhter said work had begun on a Tourism Satellite Account to address data shortages. A project to develop Tanguar Haor has also been included in this year’s Annual Development Programme.
Bangladesh Tourism Corporation Chairman M Shamimuzzaman stressed local community involvement in backwater tourism, saying employment opportunities could also improve tourist safety.
