A man has allegedly stabbed his wife to death before attempting to die by suicide following a domestic dispute in Jashore, police say.

The incident took place at a rented residence near Sheikhhati Tamaltala of Noapara Union under Sadar Upazila on Monday dawn, said Kotwali Police Inspector (Investigation) Kazi Babul Hossain.

The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Samina Akter.

Her husband, identified only as Sujon, 26, is currently undergoing treatment at the Jashore 250-bed General Hospital’s male surgery ward.

The couple were maternal cousins, police said.

Inspector Babul said, “Around 5:30am, an argument broke out between husband and wife at the house. At one stage, Sujon attacked Samina with a sharp knife, leaving her critically injured.”

He said the investigation into the incident has begun, adding that initial findings suggest a long-standing family dispute, while the exact motive is under review.

Samina’s father Shafiqul Islam alleged that Sujon used to take yaba. “After consuming yaba on Sunday around 12am, Sujon returned home and an argument started with Samina.”

Victim’s uncle Md Piyas said Sujon had previously worked abroad and the couple had married about six months ago after entering into a romantic relationship before moving into a rented house.

“He is currently unemployed and was preparing to go abroad again. The killing happened amid that situation,” he added.

Dr Shakirul Islam, an emergency department physician at the hospital, said Shamina had died before being brought to the hospital.

"Sujon also has multiple injury marks on his body," he said.

He was given first aid by doctors before being admitted to hospital.
