A Dhaka University student found unconscious at a house in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh has been declared dead after he was taken to the hospital.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Saidul Amin Shimanto, a final-year student in the Department of Chemistry.

He hailed from Birgaon village in Narsingdi’s Monohardi Thana.

Shimanto rented a flat on the ground floor of a five-storey building on Hazaribagh’s Maneshwar Road with friends.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:30am on Friday, where the doctor on duty declared him dead, according to Hazaribagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Jahid Hossain.

He said, “We received the report at night, went to Dhaka Medical, and found Shimanto’s body. We have learnt the roommate of the deceased was out at the time of the incident.”

“Initially, we suspect that he died after taking poison. We will learn the true cause of death from the post-mortem report.”

Shimanto’s uncle, Ruhul Amin, said: “Around 12:30am, Shimanto’s friend came home to find the door locked. He phoned me after calling several times and getting no response. We went to the house, broke down the door, and found Shimanto unconscious on the bed. We rushed him to Dhaka Medical, where the doctor told us he was dead.”

Shimanto’s sister is suffering from a rare disease, and their mother died during the coronavirus pandemic.

His uncle says he was “depressed” by the situation.
