A couple and their child from Savar have been burnt in a fire sparked by a suspected gas leak in their home's kitchen.

The incident occurred around 6am on Monday in Savar's Nabinagar area. The injured were later admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

The victims have been identified as Zubayer Hossain Kiron, 30, his wife Mahmuda, 27, and their son Umayer, 6.

Zubayer suffered burns on 62 percent of his body, Mahmuda on 50 percent, and Umayer on 11 percent, according to Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the facility's emergency department.

Kiron's brother Babu Mia said the family lived in a rented house in Nabinagar.

“There was a gas leak from the kitchen’s gas cylinder. When they tried to light the stove in the morning, the whole room caught fire. My brother, his wife, and their child were burnt,” he said.
