A Jubo League leader has “fallen ill” and died at Chattogram Central Jail a day after he was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from Satkania Upazila.
Senior Jail Superintendent Iqbal Hossain told bdnews24.com that Nurul Alam was brought to the jail on Tuesday evening after his arrest in a case filed at Satkania Police Station.
On Wednesday morning, he had difficulty breathing and complained of chest pain.
“He was quickly taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.”
Iqbal said, “Initially, doctors said [Nurul] had suffered a massive heart attack. The body will be handed over to the family after an autopsy.”
Nurul hailed from Satkania. Police detectives had arrested him in the area on Tuesday afternoon, his family said.
Locals say he was the joint convenor of the Dhemsha Union unit of the Jubo League, but had not been active in political activities for some time. He ran a business in the city's Reazuddin Bazar.
His elder brother, Nur Mohammad, alleges that Nurul was “branded with the Jubo League tag” due to a dispute with some locals over land.
He told bdnews24.com, "There was no case against him. He went about as he usually did and was regularly available at his shop in Reazuddin Bazar.
"We had a dispute with some people over a piece of land in Keranihat. Nurul Alam was arrested over that dispute."
Nur Mohammad said, "On Tuesday, around noon, police detectives arrested my brother from in front of Satkania Police Station. He was rushed to court by the police station. He was still healthy when he was taken to the prison in the evening.
“This morning, I was informed of his death by the prison and asked to go to the hospital."
He alleges that Nurul was “murdered” and demanded a fair investigation.
Calls were made to Chattogram District Additional Superintendent of Police (Detectives) Mohammad Ibrahim and Satkania Police chief Jahangir Alam to discuss the matter, but they did not comment on it.
