Awami League’s activities abroad under surveillance, says press secy

The ousted political party has allegedly rented an office space in India

The interim government has been monitoring the activities of the Awami League abroad, said the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

On Sunday, Shafiqul said the main reason for monitoring the party is to check whether they are creating “political instability” in the country.

“The Awami League’s activities have been banned in Bangladesh. Of course we are monitoring what they are doing abroad,” Shafiqul said.

“Once we have more concrete information on this matter, we will inform you,” he added.

The Awami League’s nearly 16-year rule in Bangladesh came to an end on Aug 5, 2024, following the July Uprising.

Since then, deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been living in New Delhi, India.

Alongside her, Awami League allies and activists have also been on the run.

In May this year, the interim government banned all activities of the Awami League.

A BBC Bangla report on Friday said the Awami League has opened an office in a commercial complex in Kolkata.
