A woman has allegedly been raped at knifepoint after her husband was brutally beaten in Rajshahi’s Charghat Upazila.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday near Sardah Railway Station, said Charghat Police chief Abdul Malek.

On Wednesday afternoon, the victim's husband filed a case naming Ashraful Islam, 35, a resident of Holidagachhi Jagirpara village, as the primary suspect.

Police said the couple earn a living by selling popcorn on trains and at railway stations.

According to the case statement, the couple left home on Tuesday afternoon as part of their routine work.

After spending the day selling on trains and at different stations, they returned to the station around 1am after boarding a Dhaka-bound train, it said.

They later sat at a tea stall near the station to have dinner.

At that time, the suspect allegedly attacked them with sticks and sharp weapons.

The husband was beaten and robbed of money earned from selling popcorn.

He fled the scene in fear after seeing a knife in the attacker’s hand.

The complaint also states that the woman was then forcibly taken to a nearby forested area and raped.

The husband told reporters on Wednesday that he screamed for help during the attack, but no one came forward immediately. Around 45 minutes later, locals responded to his cries and rescued him. He later found his wife in the nearby jungle and identified the attacker with help from locals.

Sardah stationmaster Iqbal Kabir said the incident occurred near the station late at night, but staff were not immediately aware.

Police were informed after receiving the emergency call and later rescued the victims and launched an investigation.

Officer Malek said a case has been registered and multiple police teams are working to arrest the suspect.

Investigations are also under way to determine whether others were involved.

He said legal action will be taken after the inquiry.
