The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has formed a monitoring committee to expedite and complete the trial of murder cases connected to the July Uprising.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ministry said: “It is said that, during the July Uprising, murders and other serious crimes were committed with the aim of suppressing the mass movement by students and members of the public then taking place across the country. Chargesheets have been submitted in some of these cases recently. A committee has been formed by an initiative of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs to expedite and expedite the prosecution of these cases (excluding cases pending before the International Crimes Tribunal).”
The seven-member committee is chaired by the additional secretary of the Law and Justice Department.
The other members of the committee are:
(1) A representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs (not below the rank of joint secretary)
(2) A representative of the Bangladesh Police (not below the rank of DIG)
(3) A member of the martyrs’ families nominated by the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation
(4) A human rights activist nominated by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs
(5) A lawyer nominated by the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, and
(6) Deputy solicitor of the GP-PP Branch of the Law and Justice Division (who is to be the member secretary of the panel.
The committee’s duties are:
(a) To collect a complete list of cases filed on charges of murder, including other serious crimes, committed to suppress the mass movement by students and members of the public that took place across the country during the July Uprising (including the current stage of the case).
(b) In cases where chargesheets have been filed, the committee shall identify the existing problems (if any) in the conduct of the prosecution’s activities in those cases (excluding cases pending before the International Criminal Tribunal) and make necessary recommendations to resolve these problems.
(c) The committee shall inform the victim's family and their countrymen of the progress of its activities from time to time, and
(d) The Committee shall send necessary recommendations to the government to ensure the safety of the victims and witnesses in the case.
