The investigation into the death of Jagannath University student Prattasha Majumdar Othoi has concluded that sustained mental abuse by her boyfriend, Yasin Majumdar, drove her to “take her own life”.
The suspect's lawyer, however, claims Yasin has since died after suffering a heart attack.
Othoi’s body was found at her rented home in Nandalal Lane in Dhaka's Laxmibazar on Apr 29 last year.
A day later, her father Pranab Majumdar filed a case at Sutrapur Police Station accusing Yasin of abetting her alleged suicide.
Yasin, then employed as a waiter at the Zamindari Bhoj restaurant in Lalbagh, was arrested the same day and later released on bail.
His bail was revoked on Apr 26 this year after repeated court absences, prompting an arrest warrant.
Investigating officer SI Alamgir Hossain submitted the chargesheet on May 19, which was accepted by a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate on Jul 14.
According to the charge sheet, Othoi and Yasin grew up as neighbours in Chattogram and attended the same school.
Yasin repeatedly proposed to her before they eventually entered a relationship after she enrolled in Jagannath University's music department in the 2022-23 academic session, it added.
After moving to Dhaka, Yasin followed her, found work nearby, and allegedly subjected her to repeated insults, accusations and psychological abuse.
On Apr 29, he allegedly confronted Othoi outside her hostel after music festival rehearsals, abused her and tried to stop her from participating. Investigators say she later hanged herself.
Her father said, "I have been devastated since losing my daughter. Only a parent who has lost a child understands that pain. How anyone overcomes it, only God knows."
The plaintiff's lawyer claimed CID forensic analysis recovered an intimate photograph from Yasin's phone that he allegedly used to threaten Othoi.
The investigating officer said no such evidence emerged during the investigation.
Defence lawyer Mohammad Abu Bakkar Siddique rejected the allegation, insisting Yasin possessed no such images and had been seriously ill.
He said Yasin's family informed him that the accused had died of a heart attack several days ago and that the court would be notified.
