Bangladesh imports 60 tonnes of onions from India through Sonamasjid Land Port

The government has approved the import of 900 tonnes of onions, an official says

Onion imports have begun through the Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj, the day after domestic prices were raised.

The imported onions were priced at around Tk 31 per kg.

On Sunday, 60 tonnes of onions arrived from India’s Mohaddipur in two trucks, said Sameer Chandra Ghosh, deputy director of the Sonamasjid Plant Quarantine Station.

He said the government has allowed the import of 900 tonnes of onions through the Sonamasjid port with 30 approvals. So far, 60 tonnes of onions have arrived.

Traders have said onions will be imported for $245 to $250 per tonne.

Sameer said onions last arrived from India through the Sonamasjid Land Port on Sept 9.
