The investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi has been delayed once again despite the formation of a high-powered taskforce.

On Wednesday, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Additional Superintendent of Police Md Azizul Haque, the investigating officer, failed to submit the report to the court.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam then set Aug 27 as the next date for filing the report.

The deadline for submitting the investigation report has now been deferred 128 times.

Prosecution police Sub-Inspector Mazharul Islam confirmed the development.

Maasranga Television's news editor Sagar and ATN Bangla's senior correspondent Runi were killed on Feb 11, 2012, during the Awami League government's tenure.

Runi's brother Nausher Alam Roman later filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The suspects in the case are Rafiqul Islam, Bokul Mia, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Islam alias Arun, Abu Sayeed, Sagar and Runi's two security guards, Palash Rudra Pal and Enayet Ahmed, and their associate Tanvir Rahman Khan.

Among them, Tanvir is out on bail, while Palash went into hiding after securing bail. The remaining suspects are in jail.

The case was initially investigated by a sub-inspector of the police station.

Four days later, it was handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB), which failed to solve the case after more than two months.

Following a High Court order, the investigation was transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Apr 18, 2012.

After the fall of the Awami League government, the RAB was removed from the investigation on Sept 30 last year.

The High Court then ordered the formation of a high-level taskforce comprising experienced investigators from different agencies and gave it six months to complete the probe.

On Oct 17, the Public Security Division of the home ministry issued an order forming the four-member taskforce, led by the PBI chief.
