BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus’s first state trip to China has been a huge success for the interim government.

Speaking at his Thakurgaon home on Tuesday, Fakhrul said the Awami League government had forged a “one-sided” relationship with China.

“But after the change of the government, China has also changed their notions. China is speaking to almost all the political parties [of Bangladesh] now,” he said.

“The chief advisor is the head of government. And being so, he represents Bangladesh. Because China is a very prosperous country, being the second-largest economy in the world after the US, its investment in Bangladesh is a lot as well.

“China has promised that it will invest in manufacturing and development in the coming days.”

Fakhrul also spoke about the reform proposals political parties are discussing with the Consensus Commission.

“We are discussing the reform proposals properly, observing and putting them to the test. We’ve submitted our comments and opinions to the reform commissions.”

He added that an election will be held with reforms that are “agreed upon”.

“The political parties will sign [agreement] before the election. Those who will be elected will implement the reforms.”

Fakhrul said the BNP’s political programmes continued on Eid day as well.

“As a political party, it’s our responsibility to create a relationship with citizens. We’ve worked on the 31-point demand around the country. We involved the people with it and explained it to them.”
