The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has shown former Cox’s Bazar-4 MP Abdur Rahman Bodi and three others arrested in the case over Teknaf municipal councillor Ekramul Haque’s alleged extrajudicial killing and sent them to jail.
The tribunal also ordered newspaper notices seeking the surrender of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and six other fugitives in the case.
Tribunal-2 Judge Md Manjurul Bashid passed the orders after a hearing on Tuesday. The next hearing is set for Sept 7.
The other three sent to jail are retired brigadier general Miftah Uddin Ahmed, retired brigadier general Mahbub Alam and former RAB director general retired colonel Anwar Latif Khan.
Prosecutor Moinul Karim told bdnews24.com that Bodi, Anwar and Mahbub were already detained in other cases and were shown arrested in this case through production warrants. Miftah was arrested under a warrant issued in this case.
7 Fugitives
Besides Hasina, the fugitives are former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former bridge minister Obaidul Quader, former police chief Benazir Ahmed, retired major Ruhul Amin, former DGFI officer squadron leader Nazmus Sakib Mahmud and former lieutenant commander Ashik-Ur-Rahman.
Prosecutor Mohammad Oli Mia said warrants issued against the seven could not be executed at their known addresses, prompting the prosecution to seek newspaper notices for their surrender. The tribunal granted the request.
Ekram Killing Allegations
The tribunal formally took cognisance on Jul 26 of charges against 11 people over Ekram’s killing in 2018.
The prosecution alleges Hasina pursued a plan to eliminate political opponents and critics during her rule, leading to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
Ekram, 46, was allegedly abducted from outside Hotel Ne-Taung in Teknaf on May 26, 2018, and later killed in a reported gunfight with RAB.
His family disputed the RAB account, while a leaked audio recording from around the time of his death sparked widespread criticism.
The US sanctioned seven RAB officials on Dec 10, 2021, over serious human rights abuses. Benazir was then RAB chief, while Miftah commanded RAB-7 in Cox’s Bazar.
