Calling a free press essential for democracy, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon says he sees himself as a “guardian of the media”, responsible for ensuring journalists can work independently and without intimidation.

He made the remarks at a discussion marking the Language Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day at the Barishal District Shilpakala Academy on Saturday.

“I am responsible, as the minister of information, for presenting all government plans before the nation. That cannot be done alone. The media will do it,” he said.

“No plan can be implemented if the media are not allowed to work freely and peacefully. That is why I have taken responsibility for the media. It is my duty to act as the guardian of the media.”

The minister said democracy cannot function without a free press.

“A country’s democracy cannot operate if there is no independent media. At the same time, media freedom cannot be practised without accountability. That is why we will ensure accountability to protect freedom.

“Through this path, the media will be able to reveal the full picture of the nation.”

Calling journalism an independent profession, he said disputes within the sector should be resolved through its own institutional structures and policies.

“Any external administrative or ministerial interference may undermine professional independence.”

Highlighting the relationship between the government and the media, he said journalists also face practical challenges that need to be addressed.

“The role of the media as a bridge between the government and the people is extremely important. We have started identifying and addressing the problems journalists face.”

Swapon added that the government was prioritising a new wage board to ensure financial and professional security for journalists.

He also outlined development plans, including excavating 20,000km of canals, building the Bhola-Barishal Bridge, expanding gas supply networks, and constructing a four-lane road from Bhanga to Payra Port.
