Police have recovered the decomposed bodies of a woman and her daughter from an electrified house in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.

The bodies were found at their home in Madarganj village around midnight on Monday, according to Sub-Inspector Deen Mohammad from Bhulli Police Station.

The dead were identified as Sumila Rani, 40, and her daughter Shapla, 20. Sumila was the second wife of village resident Jagadish Roy.

Locals said that Shapla was a person with disabilities. Sumila lived with her daughter at the house, which was some distance away from the other houses in the village. Jagadish did not live with them. The villagers had not heard from the mother and daughter for several days.

SI Deen said that an NGO worker had gone to the house to deliver disability benefits late on Monday afternoon. They came across a rotting smell and informed the neighbours. Police were informed and went to the scene.

“The door to the house was locked from inside. When we went to break the log, we discovered that the whole house was electrified. Police then cut the power connection, broke down the door, and recovered the two decomposing bodies.”

Local Biswajit Roy said, “We received an electric shock when we tried to open the door to the house. Then we used a tester and found the entire house was electrified. People from the power office then came and turned off the connection.”

SI Deen said that it is initially believed the two victims were electrocuted to death a few days ago. However, the bodies have been sent to the Thakurgaon 250-Bed Special General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

The causes of death will be confirmed by the post-mortem report, he said, but law enforcers are preparing to file a case over unnatural deaths at the local police station.
