The recommendation letter was received on Tuesday, the ministry’s Senior Secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury told bdnews24.com on Wednesday.

But he avoided an answer when asked if legal steps would be taken against those officials.

The five are Health Secretary Niaz Uddin Miah, Public Service Commission Secretary AKM Amir Hossain, former secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Molla Waheeduzzaman  – now chairman of the Privatisation Commission – former Liberation War Affairs Ministry secretary KH Masud Siddiqui (now OSD), and the same ministry’s Joint Secretary (OSD) Abdul Kasem Talukder.

The ACC has found proof that all of them had got their certificates through illegal means.

That was why legal measures had been recommended against them, ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman had told reporters earlier.

The national anti-corruption agency has also suggested the liberation war affairs ministry to initiate legal action against them.

According to the watchdog’s recommendation, liberation war affairs ministry will cancel their certificates and gazettes while the public administration ministry will take departmental action.

Apart from departmental cases against them for a breach of discipline, these five officials may face charges of fraud in line with public service rules.

The five top government officials allegedly got the freedom-fighter certificates close to their retirement in order to push back their retirement age by one year.

Masud Siddiqui was the secretary to the liberation war affairs ministry when he obtained the certificate.

According to service rules, one has to present their freedom-fighter certificate at the time of joining work.

The liberation war affairs ministry, so far, has revoked such certificates of 182 government officials and ordered departmental action against them.
