Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken comprehensive and multi-dimensional security measures to maintain law and order in the capital and ensure the safety of the city residents on Aug 15, the day of the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

A Friday media statement announced the additional measures but made no mention of the assassination or of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's birthday, which falls on the same day.

Nor did it explain the reasoning behind the heightened security.

Sheikh Mujib, the nation’s founding father, was assassinated on Aug 15, 1975 along with most other members of his immediate family.

Two of his daughters survived as they were abroad at the time.

After the Awami League came to power in 1996, the day was declared a national day of mourning and a general holiday.

That changed when the interim government took office in August 2024, scrapping the holiday and its formalities.

"The entire capital has been brought under strict security measures to deal with any kind of untoward incident or threat of disruption of public security,” the DMP said.

The security measures taken by police are:

> Picket and check post duty is being conducted across the capital.

> Checkposts and search activities will be intensified at all entrances to the city.

> Detective Branch (DB) and Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit personnel will be deployed in operational activities.

> SWAT, Bomb Disposal Unit and K-9 Unit will conduct sweeps at important places and public gathering places.

> Important establishments have been brought under special security plans. These areas will be under surveillance through CCTV cameras and drones.

> City SB (Special Branch) and Intelligence & Analysis (IAD) personnel will continue to conduct intelligence activities and collect information in plainclothes.

In addition, additional Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) teams will be deployed to strengthen overall security.

> Adequate Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be ready and deployed to deal with any emergency situation.

> Beyond regular deployment, additional officers will be stationed at key points, event venues, metro rail stations, bus terminals, launch piers, train stations and shopping malls across the capital.

> All senior officers of the DMP will be on the ground and will supervise the security arrangements in their respective jurisdictions.
