Primary and Mass Education Advisor Bidhan Ranjan Roy has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Jatin Sarker -- a progressive left-wing intellectual, Independence Award-winning writer, and teacher.
In a condolence letter issued on Wednesday, he said: “Prof Jatin Sarker was one of the brightest beacons of progressive thought in Bangladesh. He was a folklorist, a storyteller of the nation’s history, and a teacher of the people.”

“He was a leader who sowed the seeds of rationality, humanity, and free thinking in every sphere of society.
“He dedicated his life not only to teaching but also to Bangladesh’s struggle for independence and liberation, and to building a society free from inequality,” Bidhan added. “Through his writings, he will continue to guide future generations.”
Jatin was born Aug 18, 1936.

The 89-year-old passed away while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital at 2:45pm on Wednesday, according to Emdadul Haque Millat, president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh District committee.
Jatin was the president of the Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi central committee for two terms.
