Police have arrested 40 more people in connection with a procession brought out by the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, in Dhaka’s Gulshan area.
In a message sent by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Public Relations Division on Sunday, police said 40 people who “participated in the procession” were arrested on Saturday night.
However, they did not provide the names or identities of the arrestees.
Earlier on Saturday, police had said that 32 people who had “directly participated” in the procession were arrested. This brings the total number of arrests following the Gulshan rally to 72.
On Friday afternoon, a rally involving several hundred Awami League leaders and activists was held in the Gulshan-1 area.
When police attempted to disperse them, the rally participants detonated two crude bombs. Police also fired two rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
Several videos of the rally circulating on social media showed hundreds of people chanting “Joy Bangla.”
Police had earlier reported that two people were detained from the scene along with five live crude bombs during the procession. A case (No. 16) was filed at Gulshan Police Station the same day under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the procession.
On Saturday, police said a total of 32 people, including the two detained from the scene, had been arrested.
Meanwhile, 24 of the arrestees were produced before a court on Saturday, and Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin, the investigating officer in the case, sought 10 days’ remand for each of them. Following the request, the court granted 10 days’ remand.
