A Bangladesh Bank official has been found dead at his home in Chattogram, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Police recovered the body of 55-year-old Mohammad Sayedur Rahman from his home in the Ramna Residential Area of North Agrabad on Wednesday night.
He was a joint director at the central bank.
He leaves behind three daughters – two doctors and an engineer.
Jainal Abedin Mandul, chief of Halishahar Police Station, said Sayedur had been alone at home at the time.
His wife had gone out to take their grandson to a doctor.
Police said their initial assessment was that Sayedur had died by suicide, but investigators had yet to determine what may have led to his death.
“We have not been able to determine why. We are investigating,” Jainal said.
A colleague, however, said Sayedur’s death had come as a shock to those who knew him, describing him as cheerful and someone who maintained good relationships with his co-workers.
“Even yesterday evening, he was in a meeting with everyone from the bank,” the colleague said.
Sayedur had three daughters, two doctors and an engineer, and often spoke proudly of their achievements, according to the colleague.
Two of his daughters live in Dhaka, while the other practises in Chattogram.
The colleague said Sayedur had called his wife that night and asked her to return home quickly. She found him dead after returning, according to the colleague.
Sayedur was three years away from retirement.
Imran Khan, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Double Mooring Zone, said the body had been sent for a postmortem examination.
Police were investigating the circumstances and possible reasons behind the death, he said.
No case had been filed over the incident as of Thursday afternoon.
