Man, nephew killed by lightning while fishing in Kishoreganj

A man and his nephew have been killed by lightning while fishing in a haor in Kishoreganj's Karimganj Upazila.

The incident occurred around 7am on Saturday in Chongnowagaon Haor in Sutarpur Union, said Karimganj Police chief Md Soheb Khan.

The dead were identified as Shah Alam, 38, and his nephew Mokarram Hossain, 24. Both were from Chongnowagaon village.

Family members said Alam and Mokarram went fishing with nets in the haor in front of their village in the morning.

They were struck by lightning during light rain and died at the scene, the family said.

When the two did not return home, relatives went looking for them.

They later found the bodies in the water and informed the police.

Locals said Mokarram worked at a garment factory in Dhaka. He had recently returned home on leave and got married.

Alam worked as a labourer on boats carrying paddy, they said.

“We sent police to the scene after receiving information that two people had been killed by lightning,” Soheb said.
