A tribunal has sentenced six men to imprisonment until death for the gang rape of two young women who were abducted in South Keraniganj's Shuvadda area four years ago.

The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 in Dhaka.

The convicts are Rahul, 23, Md Diamond, 20, Afsar Uddin Onim, 22, Parvez Haque Polash, 25, Minhaj alias Minhaj Abedin, 21, and Minhaj alias Babu alias Minhaj Babu, 24.

State prosecutor Md Ershad Alam (George) confirmed the verdict.

He said each convict was also fined Tk 100,000.

The tribunal further directed the Dhaka District Magistrate or Collector to recover the fines by selling the convicts' movable or immovable property if necessary, and hand the money over to the victims or their families.

Rahul remains absconding. The tribunal issued a warrant for his arrest along with the sentencing warrant. The remaining convicts were sent to jail after the verdict.

The incident occurred four years ago, when the two young women were returning home after celebrating a friend's birthday.

According to the case statement, the two women and several friends had gone out on the afternoon of Jun 25, 2022, to celebrate a friend's birthday. At around 9:45pm, they went to Pankouri Restaurant in Keraniganj. After dinner, they were looking for an autorickshaw in the Shuvadda area to return home.

The prosecution said the accused intercepted them with an autorickshaw and took them by force to a dark field known as "Ratan's Farm" after assaulting them.

The attackers beat and intimidated the victims' friends, robbing them of their cash and mobile phones. They then raped the two women in turn and recorded video of the assault before taking away their mobile phones.

The victims' friends later informed police at South Keraniganj Police Station, who rescued the two women.

The father of one of the victims filed a gang rape case with South Keraniganj Police Station on Jun 29 that year.

Following the case, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Minhaj Abedin. Police recovered one victim's mobile phone in his possession, where videos of the incident were found.

After completing the investigation, South Keraniganj Police Station Sub-Inspector Sorojit Kumar Ghosh submitted a charge sheet against the six accused.

The tribunal later framed charges and began the trial.

During the proceedings, the tribunal heard testimony from 12 witnesses. After recording the defence statements and hearing final arguments from both sides, the tribunal delivered its verdict on Tuesday, sentencing all six accused.
