Bodies of 2 missing children found in pond in Sherpur

The bodies of two children who went missing in Sherpur’s Nalitabari Upazila have been recovered from a pond 14-and-a-half hours after they disappeared.

The bodies were recovered with the help of local residents from a large pond in the Madhya Nakshi area of Koloshpar Union early on Monday, said Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman, chief of Nalitabari Police Station.

The dead were identified as Rohan, 8, and Ismail, 9, both local residents.

Police and locals said Rohan and Ismail left their respective homes around 2pm on Sunday. When they did not return for a long time, their family members began searching for them in different locations, but could not find them.

The two children often went fishing in the local river and other water bodies. However, they did not know how to swim properly. For this reason, their relatives had feared they may have drowned from the moment they went missing.

Around 4:30am on Monday, locals spotted the bodies of the two children floating in a large pond in the Madhya Nakshi area. After being informed, family members went to the scene and, with the help of local residents, recovered the bodies. Police were subsequently notified.

Officer Ashrafuzzaman said, “The bodies were handed over to the families at their request. A case of unnatural death has been filed with the police station.”
