Bangladesh eyes another 55mmcfd gas by June 2027 from four domestic wells

Extraction has started in four new wells: one in Kamta-2 and three others in the Titas gas fields, he says

Another 55 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas will be added to the national grid by June next year through the extraction of gas from four wells, State Minister for Power Aninda Islam Amit has said.

He made the announcement after inaugurating the appraisal-cum-development (dual-purpose) well drilling at Kamta Gas Field in Gazipur’s Kaliganj Upazila on Wednesday afternoon.

Such wells are designed to evaluate the size and extent of a newly discovered reservoir and extract from it at the same time.

He said, "Extraction in four new wells -– one in Kamta-2 and three others in the Titas gas fields -- has started. It will be possible to supply 55mmcfd gas to the national grid daily from these wells by June next year."

Hoping the energy sector will become self-sufficient by reducing import dependence and increasing gas production in the country, Aninda said: “If gas production starts anew, the industries that were closed or partially operating due to the crisis will be able to resume in full swing.

"This will not only boost the industrial sector, but create employment for thousands of people."

"If gas production increases in the country, the need for importing energy from abroad will decrease and the pressure on foreign exchange will also decrease significantly," he added.
