Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to visit Chattogram on Sunday, taking part in programmes across Banshkhali, Fatikchhari and Hathazari Upazilas.

He will wrap up the tour with a meeting with BNP leaders from Chattogram Metropolitan, and North and South districts.

In Banshkhali and Hathazari, the prime minister will hand over new homes and rehabilitation support to those affected by recent flooding.

His itinerary includes a courtesy meeting with Hifazat-e Islam Bangladesh chief Shah Muhibullah Babunagari at Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Azizul Uloom Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari, followed by a visit to Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Moinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari.

The premier is likely to return to Dhaka after an exchange with party leaders and activists at the Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View hotel in the port city on Sunday night.

BNP chief Tarique last addressed a rally at Chattogram's Polo Ground on Jan 25 this year, before the national election.

A planned visit to Fatikchhari's Babunagar Madrasa in April to meet Hifazat chief did not go ahead.

This marks his first visit to Chattogram since taking office as prime minister.

Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Md Zahidul Islam Miah said, "The prime minister is scheduled to visit Chattogram on Aug 9. During the visit, he will check on the people of Banshkhali and Hathazari affected by the recent hill torrents and rain."

After arriving in Chattogram on Sunday, the prime minister will travel by helicopter to Bahaarchhara Union in Banshkhali Upazila at noon.

At 12:20pm, he will attend a programme at Paschim Banshkhali High School and College grounds, where 100 flood-affected families will receive newly built homes, relief supplies and assistance for people with disabilities, according to a district administration statement.

He will then fly to Pehelgazi Dighi field in Fatikchhari at 1:30pm before travelling by road to Babunagar Madrasa, where he is due to meet Babunagari at 2pm.

Hifazat Joint Secretary General Maulana Azizul Haque Islamabadi said Islamic scholars and local residents would welcome the prime minister, while the organisation would present its demands during the meeting.

He also said district authorities and law-enforcing agencies were coordinating security arrangements for the visit.

From Fatikchhari, Tarique will travel by road to Hathazari's Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Moinul Islam Madrasa.

Azizul Haque said Tarique would visit the graves of former Hifazat chiefs Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi and Allama Junaid Babunagari before attending a rehabilitation programme for flood-hit families at Hathazari Government College ground at 5pm.

Hathazari Upazila administrator (UNO) Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin said preparations for the visit were under way, with stages and other facilities being set up at the venues.

In the evening, the prime minister will hold an exchange of views with leaders responsible for the BNP's Chattogram city, north and south organisational units at the Chattogram hotel.

Chattogram city BNP Member Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar said the meeting would bring together party leaders from across the region, following a practice Tarique has adopted during visits to different districts.
