Mohiuddin Chishtia, joint general secretary of the Ghorashal municipality unit of the BNP and the prime suspect in a case over the alleged abduction, assault and ear-biting injury of a sand trader in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi, has held a public rally with more than 100 supporters.
The rally took place on Monday between 11:30am and 12pm outside Rowshan General Hospital and the Palli Bidyut office near Charpara, where he announced a campaign to make the municipality free from drugs.
Meanwhile, the complainant in the case, Mia Mohammad Sajib, has alleged that Mohiuddin Chishtia has been threatening to kill him unless he withdraws the case.
Sajib is the proprietor of Sajib Traders.
Attempts to contact Mohiuddin for comment on the rally were unsuccessful.
Palash Police chief Shahed Al Mamun said the suspect had addressed the gathering for only about five minutes before leaving the venue, making it impossible for police to arrest him.
Speaking at the rally, Mahiuddin said: “Following the political ideals of Abdul Moyeen Khan means standing uncompromisingly against injustice. I am not afraid in the slightest to speak out against extortionists and drug dealers.”
“The values of honesty and integrity that [Moyeen] has taught us are my greatest source of strength. There can be no compromise with wrongdoing.”
Mahiuddin also claimed that he had committed no wrongdoing.
Earlier, on the afternoon of Jul 13, a group of men allegedly abducted sand trader Md Sakhawat Hossain from in front of Bangladesh Jute Mill in Ghorashal municipality.
He was then taken to the residence of BNP leader Mahiuddin, where he was allegedly confined, physically assaulted, and forced to pay Tk 500,000 in extortion, according to the case statement.
Sajib Mia had hired Sakhawat, a sand trader, to carry out sand supply work, including renting dredging equipment and pipelines, after securing a contract to supply sand, bricks and steel rods for one of the country's leading industrial conglomerates, TK Group.
At one stage of the assault, Mahiuddin allegedly bit Sakhawat's ear, causing injuries. He also allegedly attempted to strangle him by wrapping a Gamchha or local towel around his neck.
The victim was later rescued and admitted to the Upazila Health Complex, where his ear required stitches and he received medical treatment.
A case was subsequently filed with Palash Police Station, naming Mahiuddin as the prime suspect, along with 10 others. It also accused 15 to 20 unidentified people of abduction, assault and extortion.
The case was filed by the victim's business partner and Narsingdi district Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal Vice-President Sajib Bhuiyan.
According to local residents, despite the case being filed, Mahiuddin was not arrested and instead attended a large public rally as its organiser and main speaker.
He addressed the gathering for about five minutes, while his supporters chanted slogans against their political opponents.
Videos of the rally and Mahiuddin's speech have since circulated widely on social media.
His appearance and leadership at the event, despite being the prime accused in a high-profile criminal case, have sparked widespread discussion and criticism in the area.
Local residents said they could not understand how the prime accused in an attempted murder and extortion case was able to openly participate in processions and public rallies.
Sajib Mia Bhuiyan, the plaintiff in the case and a Chhatra Dal leader, alleged that Mahiuddin and his associates had been threatening to kill him unless he withdrew the case over the abduction and assault on the businessman.
Expressing frustration, he said: "The prime accused in the case led a rally with hundreds of people on Monday, yet he has still not been arrested."
Responding to Mahiuddin's remarks at the rally, Sajib alleged: "Can Mahiuddin Chishtia really declare anyone drug-free? He himself is a criminal and the godfather of drugs in Ghorashal.”
"Ask the law-enforcing agencies how many cases were previously filed against him and what those cases were about."
Contacted by phone for comment on the case, Mahiuddin said: "I don't even know whether a case has been filed against me. If someone files a complaint with the police, they will investigate it. Only then can I be accused.
"I have not received any documents related to the case. The police have not questioned me about it either."
"The plaintiff in the case is not the injured person, but someone else. Why that person became the complainant is also something that should be considered,” he added.
