A suspected ringleader, facing several charges including murder, has been hacked to death by rivals during a violent turf war in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.
He was attacked around 4:30pm on Sunday near the Buddhijibi Road.
Emon was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment, police said.
The victim has been identified as Emon alias Alex Emon, alleged leader of a teenage group named after him.
"A fight broke out between the Alex Emon Group and the rival Arman-Shahrukh Group over establishing supremacy in the area," said Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of Mohammadpur Zone.
Police arrested three suspects -- Md Saif, 23, Tuhin, 20, and Md Rabbi Kazi, 25 -- from the scene.
Officers also recovered three machetes, a cutter, and a steel plate from their possession.
According to police, Emon was a "marked" gang leader in Rayer Bazar with a criminal record involving charges of robbery and murder.
CCTV footage of the brawl showed members of the rival groups chasing each other with sharp weapons. Emon was seen carrying a weapon himself before he collapsed, at which point his opponents launched a coordinated attack.
Police said Emon's legs were severed in the assault, and his body bore numerous hack wounds on his knees and arms.
