Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and Ganosamhati Andolan Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki have declined to join the Constitution Reform Council despite being sworn in as members of the 13th national parliament.
The two leaders, elected from Patuakhali-3 and Brahmanbaria-6, restricted their participation to the legislative oath.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the parliamentary oath to Nur and five other candidates during the fourth phase of the ceremony at 1:35pm on Tuesday.
While they formalised their roles as lawmakers, they pointedly sat out the reform council proceedings.
Shortly after, at 1:45pm, Saki followed suit during the fifth phase, similarly bypassing the second oath.
Earlier in the afternoon, NCP representatives took their seats as MPs at 1:22pm before returning at 1:25pm to join the reform body.
This followed a period of uncertainty where the BNP’s refusal to join the council initially caused hesitation amongst other groups.
Both Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP, however, eventually proceeded with both ceremonies, with Jamaat members completing their dual induction an hour prior to the NCP.
