Eight workers burnt in fire at Sitakunda ship breaking yard

Sparks during ship-cutting has ignited flammable materials near the engine room

Eight workers have been burnt in a fire caused by an explosion at a shipbreaking yard in Chattogram’s Sitakunda Upazila.

Police said the explosion occurred at the Ziri Subedar Ship Breaking Yard on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Chattogram Industrial Police Abdullah Al Mahmud told bdnews24.com that the fire broke out when sparks from ship-cutting work fell on flammable materials, including burnt oil, scattered on the ground near the engine room.

“Two of the workers have suffered 20 to 25 percent burns to their bodies and we have heard that the others suffered minor injuries.”
