State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M Iqbal Hossain has described the flood situation in Chattogram, triggered by days of heavy rain and landslides since Jul 5, as “terribly bad”.
Speaking to reporters at the Chattogram Circuit House on Saturday, he said the government had been closely monitoring the situation over the past four to five days.
"I will visit five districts over the next two days to assess the damage and determine whether additional assistance is needed," Iqbal said.
He said the government was responding in line with the scale of the disaster.
"The situation here is indeed terribly bad. We know how severe it is," he said.
“That is why we are taking measures accordingly. I have come to see the situation on the spot and monitor the relief distribution activities.”
The state minister said authorities were preparing a list of affected people and drawing up a rehabilitation plan based on the extent of the damage.
“The government has sufficient relief stocks. Relief will be provided according to the needs identified by the local administration," he said.
