Three people have been killed and 18 others injured after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a ditch in Gopalganj's Muksudpur Upazila.

The accident occurred around 10:30am on Sunday in the Salinaboksha area on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway, Muksudpur Police chief Abdullah Al Mamun said.

Police said one of the dead was a woman and the other two were men, but their names and identities could not immediately be confirmed.

Doctor Dip Saha of Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex said 18 people had received treatment at the hospital. Four of them were in critical condition and were sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Md Abdullah, an injured passenger from Zianagar in Pirojpur, said the driver lost control and plunged into the ditch because he was travelling at excessive speed.

"There were 40 passengers on the bus. Three of them died at the scene. Everyone else was injured to varying degrees," he said.

Muksudpur Upazila administrator (UNO) Mahmud Ashik Kabir visited the scene and said the injured were receiving treatment at local and other hospitals.

The identities and addresses of the dead had not been established, he said.

Police officer Abdullah said the bodies of the three victims had been recovered and would be handed over to their families after the completion of legal procedures.

The situation at the scene is now normal, and traffic on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway is moving normally, he said.
