Islami Andolan Bangladesh has said the death sentence handed to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the July Uprising crimes against humanity case “fulfilled the expectations of the oppressed”.
On Monday, Secretary General Yunus Ahmad said the verdict reflects justice and will stand as a “milestone” in Bangladesh’s political history.
He also said it will serve as “a deterrent against the abuse of state power and oppression of citizens”.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumdar delivered the verdict in the first case of crimes against humanity related to attempts to suppress the July Uprising.
Ahmad said the fallen fascist regime had built an “extensive criminal network” and one key figure has now received a verdict.
He said every offender must face justice in phases and conveyed gratitude on behalf of Islami Andolan Bangladesh to all who have been involved in the judicial process.
The leader also conveyed respect and sympathy to the families of the martyrs and those injured.
Ahmad said the law must run its course and all crimes must be handled through legal procedure.
He urged the government to complete the required steps and carry out the verdict without delay.
Described the day as one of relief, he said people would not allow any disorder, nor should anyone take the law into their own hands.
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis chief Mamunul Haque and Secretary General Jalaluddin Ahmad called the verdict “a historic judgment against fascism and oppression”.
In a joint statement, they said the death sentence for Hasina will be seen as proof of long-awaited justice following “16 years of killings, enforced disappearances, repression, abductions and genocide”.
They described it as “a clear manifestation of Allah’s justice”.
