A former local leader of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, has been killed after a dump truck hit with an autorickshaw in the southeastern district of Lakshmipur.
Akbar Hossain Munna, joint convenor of the Lakshmipur district unit of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), said Rubel Chowdhury, 30, died early Monday while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as the Pongu Hospital, in Dhaka.
The accident occurred around 9:30pm on Sunday in front of the Department of Youth Development on the Majuchowdhury Hat Road in Lakshmipur town.
Rubel was a former president of Janakalyan High School Chhatra Dal and hailed from Banchanagar in Ward No. 4 of Lakshmipur municipality.
According to locals, Rubel was travelling as a passenger in an autorickshaw when a speeding dump truck struck the vehicle near the Department of Youth Development.
Citing Rubel's brother, Munna said the victim sustained severe injuries to his head, arms and legs in the collision.
"We express our condolences on behalf of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal," Munna said. "How many more young lives will these uncontrolled killer dump trucks claim?"
Repeated calls to Lakshmipur Sadar Police chief Wahid Parvez for comment went unanswered.
