A fertiliser trader has been killed and three others, including his two sons, injured after an oil tanker ran them over and crashed into a roadside shop in Noakhali's Kabirhat Upazila.

The accident occurred around 11am on Friday in the Transmitter area of Sundalpur union along the Sonapur–Kabirhat road, said Kabirhat Police Station chief (OC) Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan.

The dead trader was identified as Shafiqul Rahman, 62. Among the injured are Shafiqul's sons Saiful Islam, 23, and Saidur Rahman, 20, and a local trader, Sohag.

According to locals, a Jamuna Oil tanker was travelling from Sonapur in Sadar Upazila towards Kabirhat when it lost control and ploughed into Shafiqul and his two sons, who were in front of their shop.

Shafiqul had gone to the shop earlier in the morning with his sons on a motorcycle. Around 11am, he was sitting outside the shop talking to them about going to Kabirhat market when the tanker ran over them and rammed into Sohag’s adjacent shop.

Shafiqul died at the scene.

Locals rushed the injured to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. After receiving primary treatment, Shafiqul’s two sons were referred to Dhaka for advanced care. Family members said their condition remains critical.

OC Nizam said police detained the truck driver from the scene and took him into custody. The body of the deceased was also recovered.

LOCALS BLOCK ROADS

After the incident, locals blocked the Sonapur–Kabirhat road for nearly two hours.

They said there are four to five educational institutions near the road, with thousands of students crossing it daily. Despite repeated demands, the road was not widened and no speed breakers had been installed by the Roads and Highways Department, locals alleged.

Later, local MP Md Fakhrul Islam and Kabirhat police reached the scene and assured locals about installation of speed breakers or a pedestrian footbridge, prompting protesters to withdraw the blockade.
