Police have recovered the bodies of a housewife and her son from their house in Jashore’s Bagharpara Upazila.
The bodies were recovered around 10pm on Saturday from Khalshi village, said Sub-Inspector Palash of Bagharpara Police Station.
He said, “Initially, it does not seem like an incident of suicide. But we can’t say anything definitive before the postmortem.”
The deceased have been identified as 32-year-old Zubaida Khatun, the wife of local resident Zakir Hossain, and their 6-year-old son Jishan.
Local veterinarian Akhter Hossain said that, around 9pm on Saturday, he heard Zakir's wife and son were lying motionless on the bed. When he went to the spot, he saw Jishan's hands and feet were tied with a towel and the body of his mother was lying on the same bed. He later informed Zakir.
He said, "Zakir was at his business establishment in Bahrampur Bazar. Zubaida had a veil wrapped around her neck."
Pinjira, Zubaida’s younger sister, said: "Zakir Hossain had been abroad for a long time. He returned to the country about a year ago."
Neighbours of the deceased said no one had any enmity with Zubaida’s family. They believe Zubaida may have killed her son first and then committed suicide.
When asked whether the incident appeared to be a murder or a suicide, Bagharpara Police chief Shah Jalal Alam said: "The incident is suspicious. The bodies of the mother and son have been recovered and sent to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for a postmortem."
