A Chattogram court has sentenced three people, including a woman, to death for the murder of her husband.

Chattogram Additional District and Sessions Judge HM Shafiqul Islam delivered the verdict on Monday.

The death row convicts are Rima Akhter, Shahadat Hossain Quayyum, and Abdul Quayyum.

Afsar Uddin Helal, the additional public prosecutor at the court, said that the court sentenced the three after finding them guilty of killing Rima’s husband in connection with an extramarital affair.

“Of the other two convicts, Rima Akhter had an extramarital relationship with Shahadat Hossain Quayyum. Abdul Quayyum is Shahadat Hossain Quayyum’s friend.”

They were in court at the time of the verdict and were sent to prison afterwards, Afsar said.

The case dossier says that Joynal Abedin aka Kala Mia was killed in the Telipara area of Chattogram’s Sitakunda on the night of Apr 9, 2021.

He ran a fruit business in the city’s Halishahar area.

The case documents say that Rima stabbed her husband to death with the help of Shahadat and Abdul. They then dumped the body in a pond.

Police recovered the body early the following day. The victim's cousin, Mohiuddin, filed a case at Sitakunda Police Station over the incident.

On Apr 12, 2021, police arrested Rima and Shahadat. Both of them later gave confessional statements to the court.

Sajib Hossain, who was a sub-inspector at Sitakunda Police Station at the time, submitted the chargesheet against the three suspects in the case on Oct 26, 2021, after the investigation concluded.

On May 11, 2023, the suspects were indicted by Chattogram Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Rafiqul Islam.
